This specimen was lot 22629 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Anaheim, CA, August 2016), where it sold for $305.50. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "ITALY. Lira, 1901-R. NGC MS-64. Stunning gunmetal blue toning over highly reflective prooflike fields, though not indicated as (PL) on the label. Far nicer than typically encountered for the type, and a coin worthy of addition to your collection even as a duplicate." This type was struck for the kingdom of Italy 1901-07. The weight and fineness matches that of a [[France 1901 franc|French franc]]. This denomination was struck to this standard until 1917, when the stress of wartime inflation forced the government to suspend production. When mintage of the lira resumed in 1922, it was a nickel coin. Vittorio Emanuele III succeeded his father Umberto upon the latter's assassination in 1900.
