This specimen was lot 24123 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $85. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "IRELAND. Farthing, ND (1625-44). Charles I (1625-49). PCGS Genuine--Cleaned, Unc Details Secure Holder. Cleaned, sharply struck. From the Brighton Collection." Note the bell mintmark, one of thirty eight recorded for this issue.

Ludovic Stewart, 2nd Duke of Lennox (1574-1624), won a contract to produce farthings in 1614, which he held until his death. He is better known to history by his English title, earl (later duke) of Richmond, which he received from James I in 1613. His brother Esmé succeeded him but survived him by only four months. Esmé's son, James Stewart, succeeded him as 4th duke of Lennox but did not receive the title of duke of Richmond until 1641. It is likely James Stewart who had these farthings made for Charles I, of which 38 mintmarks are known.
