This specimen was lot 4543 in Sincona sale 4 (Zurich, October 2011), where it sold for 3,800 CHF (about US$5,055 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''DEUTSCHLAND Kaiserreich Hessen, Grossherzogtum Münzstätte Darmstadt bis 1880, danach Berlin Ludwig III. 1848-1877. 20 Mark 1892. Gutes vorzüglich.'' (Grand duchy of Hesse, Louis III, 1848-77, twenty mark of 1892, Berlin mint. Good very fine.)"</blockquote> This is another rare and expensive gold issue from the German pricipalities after their incorporation into the German empire. It is not an issue of Ludwig III but that of his successor, Ludwig IV (1877-92). Twenty mark pieces also exist for 1872-74 and 1893, each a different type. The Grand Duchy was formerly the Landgraviate of [[German States, Hesse-Darmstadt|Hesse-Darmstadt]] but the -Darmstadt was dropped when Hesse-Cassel was annexed by Prussia in 1866.
