This specimen was lot 38368 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2025), where it sold for $660. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "GERMANY. [[German States, Hamburg|Hamburg]]. 2 Mark, 1898-J. Hamburg Mint. Free City. PCGS MS-65." Hamburg, on the North Sea, was one of two imperial free cities permitted a continued existence under the Empire of 1871; Bremen was the other. She struck silver two, three and five mark and gold ten and twenty mark until that Empire's collapse in 1918. The Hamburg mint is still in operation, striking coins for the Federal Republic of Germany. This type was struck 1892-1908, 1911-1914.
