[[German States, Hamburg|Hamburg]], on the North Sea, was one of two imperial free cities permitted a continued existence under the Empire of 1871; Bremen was the other. The Hamburg mint is still in operation, striking coins for the Federal Republic of Germany. This type was struck 1855 only while Hamburg was an independent Free City but is very common. The ''dreiling'' was one fourth of a ''schilling'' which in turn was one sixteenth of a thaler altho Hamburg struck no thalers during the nineteenth century.
