[[Guyana]] began its numismatic life as the Dutch-held colony of [[Essequibo &amp;amp; Demerary]], which later became [[Guyana, British Guiana|British Guiana]]. Independence was gained in 1966. Guyana gravitates toward relations with English-speaking Caribbean island nations such as [[Trinidad and Tobago]] rather than with other South American nations. The coin shown is a ten dollars in nickel-plated steel. Obverse shows coat of arms, reverse shows an itinerant miner or 'porknocker' as they are locally known, using a pan to determine the occurrence of gold flakes in a slurry of gold-bearing mud.&lt;br /&gt;
