This twenty-five centavos is a variation on the familiar slouched liberty type struck 1879-99. This type was struck 1889-90 and is common. A twenty-five centavos with a large "25 CENTs" ([[Guatemala 1893 25 centavos||KM 209.2]]) also exists for 1890. The Guatemalan government made sevaral attempts in the late 1800's to decimalize the currency, of which this type is an example, but the extreme conservatism of the Indian peasantry forced the mint to return to the real system. The last silver two reales was struck in 1899.
