This specimen was lot 24454 in Heritage sale 3030 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $2,820. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Republic gold 4 Pesos 1866-R, AU Details (Surface Hairlines) NGC. Types as described previously. Faintest handling marks but little actual wear and lustrous. More attractive overall than the Eliasberg (ANR 4/2005, lot 3050 for $4,000) coin and comparable to the Haberthuer (SBC 1/1996, lot 2719) piece. The nice Caballero de las Yndias specimen looked Mint State and realized a hefty figure (Aureo 4/2009, lot 306 for €6,000). By far the rarest date of this type: when Freeman Craig sold this same specimen over thirty years ago, he described it as "RRRR date - even the remote possibility that its unique". It remains very rare with only eight specimens confirmed by the cataloger. Ex. Freeman Craig (3/1981, lot 488 for $5,775). From The Isaac Rudman Collection of Guatemala Coins." This type is listed for 1866-69 and is part of a gold series which included one, two, four, five, eight, ten, sixteen and twenty pesos.
