This specimen was part of lot 28706 in Heritage sale 3031 (Dallas, January 2014), which sold for $528.75. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Guatemala Republic gold Carrera Bust Quartet, KM135 & KM179. Lot of four coins, as follows: 4 Reales 1860-R and 1861-R, 1 Peso 1859-R and 1860-R. All showing strongman Rafael Carrera's bust facing right. The 4 Reales coins essentially Mint State, the 1 Peso coins Extremely Fine. From The Isaac Rudman Collection of Guatemala Coins." Guatemala retained the real as a division of the peso until 1912, long after her neighbors had converted to decimal coinage. Indeed, attempts by the government in the 1870's to issue decimal coins (such as the 50 centavos of 1870) were failures. The portrait is of Rafael Carrera, cattle rustler, bandit, guerrilla leader and finally President of the Republic. The coin is one of the smallest gold coins ever issued and is one of three dates, 1860, 1861 and 1864. Silver four reales were minted 1860-94.
