This specimen was lot 287 in Sedwick Treasure Auction 26 (Winter Park, FL, November 2019), where it sold for $952. The catalog description[1] noted, "[[Guatemala]], cob 8 reales, 1737J. Full date below full crowned globes and pillars, also full crown above shield on other side with clear assayer to left and denomination to right, darkly toned, minimal surface oxidation. Recovered from ''Reijgersdaal'', sunk in 1747 off South Africa." 1733 was the first year the Guatemala mint struck coinage, having first applied for authorization from the Spanish crown in 1714. The machinery was brought from Mexico City, and had already seen much service. As a consequence of that, and the fact that in Guatemala there were few people skilled in striking coins, production of milled coins equivalent to those being produced at Mexico City was not economically feasible[2]. The endeavor was abandoned shortly thereafter and the mint began striking coins on irregular planchets without applying edge devices, thereby achieving an acceptable rate of production.
