This specimen was lot 271 in Sincona sale 75 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 900 CHF (about US$1,093 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Grossbritannien | Königreich. George III. 1760-1820. 1/2 Guinea 1789, London. Spade 1/2 Guinea. Fifth laureate head. NGC AU55." This type, struck 1787-1800, is the commonest English gold coin of the eighteenth century. The reform of 1817 terminated all guinea-denominated issues in favor of the sovereign. At that time the guinea, which heretofore had varied in value, was fixed at 21 shillings.<br />
