This specimen was lot 1793 in Sincona sale 82 (Zurich, May 2023), where it sold for 3,600 CHF (about US$4,818 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "George III. 1760-1820. 1/2 Guinea 1773, London. Second laureate head. ''Sehr selten'' (Very rare). NGC MS62. ''Prachtvolle Erhaltung'' (Magnificent condition). From the Herman Selig Collection Part II, auction Spink 131, London, March 1999, lot 1043. Finest certified by NGC." This bust appeared on the half guinea 1764-69 and 1773-74. By this time, the mint had ceased to produce anything but gold coins and Maundy sets, causing a grave shortage of circulating media. Guineas were superseded by sovereigns during the reform of 1817.
