This specimen was lot 56421 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2024), where it sold for $192. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[French Guiana|FRENCH GUIANA]]. 10 Centimes, 1818-A. Paris Mint. NGC MS-64. Struck in billon." French Guiana is still today part of [[France]]. Formerly a slave colony, abolition was implemented in 1794. The region was home to the notorious Devil's Island prison, which closed in 1953. The population, now about 285,000, was about 20,000 when these coins were struck. Ten centimes were issued for French Guiana in 1818 and 1846 only at a time when no base metal coinage was being minted in France.
