This specimen was lot 2295 in Sincona sale 77 (Zurich, May 2022), where it sold for 300 CHF (about US$364 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''FRANCE. Louis Philippe, 1830-1848. 1/4 Franc 1840 D, Lyon. Sehr selten. 15'350 Exemplare geprägt. NGC MS63.'' (kingdom of [[France]], Louis Philippe, 1830-48, quarter franc of 1840, Lyon mint. Very rare, 15,350 pieces struck.)"</blockquote> This tiny coin was struck at Rouen under the régime of king Louis Philippe (1830-48). It is a scarcer date of a type struck 1831-45. All quarter francs of this reign are of this type, which is common. It was replaced in 1845 by a twenty-five centimes piece (F.167) and demonetized in 1852. ''Le Franc'' notes 108 dates for the type, some very rare. This date is priced about nine times the commonest date (1840-A).<br />
