This specimen was lot 73028 in Stack's Bowers Collector's Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2023), where it sold for $384. The catalog description[1] noted, "[[France|FRANCE]]. Ecu, 1709-H. La Rochelle Mint. Louis XIV. PCGS VF-35. A wholesome specimen, this example displays good details and limited instances of handling. An impressive piece for any specialist in the series." Shown is a écu aux trois couronnes (écu with three crowns) of France struck at the Lyon mint in the last years of Louis XIV's reign. This is last type of écu struck during the Sun King's life. The type was struck 1709-15 in substantial numbers. There are also 1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 écus struck during this period with this design. This date is common.
