This specimen was lot 986 in Jean Elsen sale 158 (Brussels, March 2024), where it sold for €900 (about US$1,170 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''VLAANDEREN, Graafschap, Philips IV (1621-1665), AR dukaton, 1632, Brugge. Eerste type. Vz/ Bb. r., met brede kraag. Kz/ Gekroond wapenschild gehouden door twee leeuwen. Onderaan het juweel van het Gulden Vlies. Gereinigd. Krasjes op vz. Op een uitzonderlijke brede muntplaat geslagen. Zeer Fraai.'' ([[Netherlands, Spanish|county of Flanders]], Philip IV, 1621-65, silver ducaton of 1632, Bruges mnt, First type. Obverse: bust right with ruffed collar; reverse: Crowned arms supported by two lions, the jewel of the Golden Fleece below. Cleaned, Scratches on obverse, struck on an exceptionally wide planchet. Very Fine.)"</blockquote> Ducatons were issued in the Spanish Netherlands and associated states (including the bishopric of Liege and Franche Comte) during the seventeenth century, where they competed with French écus, German talers and Dutch daalders and patagons. The type shown here was struck for Flanders in 1622 and 1631-36. Similar ducatons were struck for Tournai ([[Tournai 1632 ducaton Dav-4450|Dav-4450]]), Artois ([[Artois 1635 ducaton Dav-4448|Dav-4448]]) and Brabant ([[Brabant 1632(h) ducaton Dav-4444|Dav-4444]]). The series is plagued by bad planchets and poor strikes, tho less so than the [[Flanders 1633 patagon Dav-4464|patagons]].
