 The first specimen was lot 40533 in Ponterio sale 168 (Philadelphia, August 2012), where it sold for $3,172. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"[[Germany|GERMANY]]. Eichstatt. 2 Taler, 1790-W. NGC MS-63. Sede Vacante (1790). Very attractive, toned with luminescent multi-color highlights."</blockquote>The second specimen was lot 20633 in Heritage sale 3021 (New York, January 2013), where it sold for $6,462.50. The catalog description[2] noted, <blockquote>"Eichstaat, Sede Vacante 2 Taler 1790 W, MS65 NGC, jumbo holder. Intriguing design featuring the empty Papal Seat. A bit of scattered reverse toning, over full mint brilliance, with bold strike, and no significant flaws. One of the nicer examples we have seen."</blockquote>The bishopric of Eichstatt, now in Bavaria, occasionally issued coins. This double thaler was minted in Nuremberg. "Sede vacante" (vacant seat)  thalers (or double thalers, as here) were issued on the occasion of the death of the incumbent bishop (or pope) and prior to the elevation of his successor.
