This note was lot 436 in Ponterio sale 145 (Chicago, April 2009), where it sold for $431. The catalog description noted, "PANAMA. Banco de Panama. 1 Peso, (ND) ca. 1869. P-S721. A lovely tough-to-find piece that kicks off the Banco De Panama series and is quite challenging to find in higher grades. This piece is heavily circulated but still retains nice color for the grade. Multiple internal splits and some paper pulls are seen, GOOD-VERY GOOD."

This note was lot 437 in Ponterio sale 145 (Chicago, April 2009), where it sold for $747.50. The catalog description noted, "PANAMA. Banco de Panama. 5 Pesos, (ND) ca. 1869. P-S722. A terrific piece that shows a deep brown underprint that gives way to a vignette of a globe with Panama at the center with shipping routes drawn in. A 4-4-0 steam engine and steam ships flank the right and left sides respectively. A bearded portrait of Antonio Planas is seen at the left. The note has a body of a Very Fine piece but has suffered some typically seen splits for this note. Some tape on the back in the centerfold is noted, FINE."

This note was lot 438 in Ponterio sale 145 (Chicago, April 2009), where it sold for $37,375. The catalog description noted, "PANAMA. Banco de Panama. 50 Pesos, (ND) ca. 1869. P-S725. Here is another important Panama-related item. This 50 Pesos note is one many collectors will never have the opportunity to see and we are pleased to offer it today. The note is listed as rare in the SCWPM and the familiar vignette as seen with every denomination above One Peso is located at the center. Antonio Planas is portrayed at the left and right. The very low serial number of "0010" is a welcome addition to this already elusive note's nature. There are few carefully repaired splits at the quarter folds and they are only noticed upon close examination. VERY FINE."

This note was lot 8228 in Ponterio sale 150 (Los Angeles, August 2009), where it sold for $3,047.50. The catalog description noted, "PANAMA. 1 Balboa, 1941. P-22a. When seeking the pinnacle of quality for the Arias Issue One Balboa note, this piece tops out the census data for PMG with only one other graded example its equal. The note has wonderful margins and color along with stunning eye appeal. A very minor stain on the top margin is noted for accuracy. PMG GEM UNCIRCULATED 66EPQ."

This set of notes was lot 1014 in Ponterio sale 145 (Chicago, April 2009), where it sold for $21,850. The catalog description noted, "PANAMA. 1, 5, 10 & 20 Balboas, 1941. P-22-25. This important complete set of issued banknotes from the Panama 1941 Arias type is a highlight of the sale and will surely garner attention from everyone in the World Paper Money scene. It has been many years since we last recall a set being publicly offered and it realized well over five figures. With the 20 Balboa piece being quite rare having no more than 10 pieces known, according to reputable sources, this complete set will be highly in demand.

"The One Balboa note is likely amongst the finest known, as it is a striking About Uncirculated piece with just a hint of circulation in the form of a very light off center diagonal bend which is only observed under careful examination. The Five Balboas note is downright scarce in any grade and the Very Fine note in this gathering shows the vibrantly colored underprints with real glamour. The second to last note, but we feel as important as the 20 Balboas note is the 10 Balboas note offered in this lot. We grade the 10 Balboas note as a striking Very Fine with nice originality. It also bears a lovely and aesthetically pleasing low serial number of '000013.' The final note is the one that is admired by nearly all involved in the field. The 20 Balboas note in this lot is 55 pieces away, by serial number, to the note pictured on the back cover of the General Issues SCWPM. The note here bears the likable serial number '000300,' which is set on a wonderfully engraved geometric design making up the underprint. A detailed engraving of oxen pulling a cart in the vignette is a great choice for the note by the Hamilton Bank Note Company. As this group has not been offered in many years our estimate may well turn out to be conservative for this truly spectacular set of Panama notes that circulated for a very limited amount of time. (Total: 4 notes) VERY FINE-ABOUT UNCIRCULATED."
