This specimen was lot 5530 in Ponterio sale 152 (New York, January 2010), where it sold for $3,450. The catalog description noted, "JAPAN. 1 Yen, ND (1873). P-10. We are incredibly pleased to offer this sensational Constitutional Monarchy Great Imperial Japanese Circulating Note which is among the most highly desirable notes issued by Japan. These notes were printed by the Continental Banknote Company in New York and offer sensational designs. These National Banknotes are surprisingly similar to the First Charter National Banknotes that the U.S.A. circulated and show vignettes at the left and right on the face with a large central vignette on the reverse. This note shows the bow of a ship at a full capacity of warriors at the left with a single Japanese warrior at the right armed with a bow and arrows. The reverse then shows the large ensuing costal battle scene with the land warriors prevailing. These notes are typically found in very low grades with stains and pinholes but this note is presented without either. Great clarity of the design is showcased in a very appealing problem free grade. Clear overstamps are also observed and this note borders on a full Very Fine grade. An exciting note worthy of a premium bid. FINE-VERY FINE."

A scarce note which is shown with four punch cancels and great overall appeal. This piece shows the light blue under print and has only a single margin tear at the top and a few flecks of rust to be noted. VERY FINE."
