This specimen was lot 1189 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Cuba|CUBA]], Havana mint, gold piefort 50 pesos, 1990, José Martí, NGC MS 69 (EMO Collection Label), "top pop." Virtually perfect frosted finish, currently tied with four others for finest in the NGC census, from a reported mintage of just 12 pieces. Pedigreed to The Emilio M. Ortiz Collection of Cuban Gold Coins." Martí, best known as the author of "Guantanamera", has been adopted as a hero of the Cuban revolution, tho it seems unlikely that he would have much sympathy with the Communists. The bust used here originally appeared on the Cuban gold issues of 1915-16, minted in Philadelphia. This design was also used in 1988 and 1989.
