Neighboring Nicaragua, under the earnest if incompetent Sandinista regime, managed to feature the rebel general Augusto Sandino on its [[Nicaragua 1980 cordoba|coins]] of the 1980's. This type was struck 1982-84 and is accompanied by one, [[Costa Rica 1983 5 colones|five]], ten and [[Costa Rica 1983 20 colones|twenty colones]] issues. Later series of the 1990's added the fifty and hundred colones as inflation eroded the power of the currency.
