This specimen was lot 30038 in Heritage sale 3029 (New York, January 2014), where it sold for $8,812.50. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Among the Finest Known [[Central American Republic]] gold Escudo 1847 CR-JB, MS63 NGC. As well-struck as the date comes, with a perfectly centered strike and undisturbed luster throughout. Definitely one of the finest examples known of this rare date, easily besting the Eliasberg-Mayer example that was an XF." This type was struck in Costa Rica in 1828, 1833 and 1844-49 in sufficient numbers that it is somewhat available today. The type was also struck in Guatemala 1824-25 (KM 6). The SCWC files this coin under the Central American Republic. This federation was an attempt to unite all the former Spanish provinces of Central America into one country but collapsed amid recrimination and civil war.
