This fifty centavos was struck in Bogotá for [[Colombia]], of a type issued 1965 only. It is accompanied by a copper-nickel [[Colombia 1965 20 centavos|twenty centavos]]. Jorge Gaitan was the mayor of Bogotá and the Liberal party candidate for president when he was assassinated in 1948. His murder touched off a three year civil war between the Liberals and the Conservatives in Colombia. When the Liberals obtained the presidency in 1965, their first act was to issue this coin in honor of their martyr.
