The first specimen shown was lot 1134 in Sedwick sale 11 (Winter Park, FL, April 2011), where it sold for $287.50. The catalog description[1] noted, "Popayán, [[Colombia]], 1/2 decimo, 1875, fineness 0,666. AU with typically weak interiors but highly lustrous and lightly toned legends, far above normal grade for this issue and possibly the finest known." The second specimen was lot 44351 in Stack's Bowers ANA sale (Philadelphia, August 2018), where it sold for $1,380. The catalog description[2] noted, "COLOMBIA. 1/2 Decimo, 1875. Popayan Mint. VG-10 (PCGS). Restrepo lists as 'rare', and states that all examples he has seen are so worn it is difficult to discern date and fineness. By contrast this example has easily readable date and peripheral legends, and even shows some detail on the central devices. Dark gray toning throughout. Possibly the best example one could hope for of this one year type. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian Coins." The Popayán mint struck half décimos (= five centavos) 1868-78 and its product is listed fairly cheaply in the SCWC but, like many Colombian minors, is seldom seen. Several varieties exist for this date.
