This specimen was lot 12161 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,020. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "COLOMBIA. 1843-UM 16 Pesos. Popayán mint. AU-55 (PCGS). Good color, strike, and luster, with scattered marks and a shallow lamination in the right obverse field. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Lester Merkin's sale of December 1973, lot 579." This type, struck at Popayán 1837-46, replaced the earlier eight escudos (KM 82.2) and is identical in size and weight. It was also produced at Bogotá. Assayer UM is listed for 1842-46.
