This specimen was lot 20733 in Heritage sale 3010 (Boston, August 2010), where it sold for $2,530. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Carlos IIII gold 8 Escudos 1804JF Popayán, MS61 NGC, very sharply struck with appealing mint brilliance. Quite a nice coin for this designation with superior surfaces." The type was struck in Popayán in Nueva Granada (now [[Colombia]]) 1791-1808. Overdates abound. Another assayer, JT, is noted for 1804.
Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common.
