This specimen was of lot 23611 in Heritage sale 3020 (Long Beach, September 2012), where it sold for $1,527.50. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Carlos III gold 8 Escudos 1788-JJ Nuevo Reino, AU Details NGC bent, light toning with luster in the legends." This type was struck at Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and Popayán 1785-89 and is the most common gold coin of Charles III. It remains much in demand and is still expensive. Many overdates are recorded. In 1785, the purity was reduced from .901 to .875 fine.
