This specimen was lot 30631 in Heritage sale 3049 (Long Beach, September 2016), where it sold for $1,645. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Charles III gold 8 Escudos 1775/4 P-JS XF40 NGC, Popayan mint, Fault-less for the grade, with remnants of luster clinging to the legends, a strong strike and no individually bothersome marks. The clear under-digit in the date certainly helps add a touch of character." The type was struck in Popayán in Nueva Granada (now Colombia) 1772-84 (later dates were .875 fine). Assayer JS is noted for 1772-76. Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) and its neighbor Popayán were the most prolific issuers of gold coins during the colonial period and this coin is common.
