This specimen was lot 11178 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $1,800. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "COLOMBIA. 1773-VJ 8 Escudos. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-55 (PCGS). Flashy and well struck, with bold luster and nice medium yellow gold toning. A subtle batch of adjustment marks are seen on the bust and at the lower left extremity of the shield. Reflective at the rims, frosty elsewhere. A beautiful piece. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Christie's Geneva sale of the Kurt Homme Collection, November 25-26, 1981, lot 855." This "standard bust" eight escudos, struck 1772-84, superseded the "rat nose" bust used at Bogotá 1762-71. The Popayán mint also adopted the new bust, dropping the old bust of the prior king, Ferdinand VI, used until 1771. The year marked a debasement from .917 fine to .901 fine gold.
