This specimen was lot 11177 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2018), where it sold for $2,100. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "COLOMBIA. 1772-JS 8 Escudos. Popayán mint. Carlos III (1759-1788). AU-55 (PCGS). Boldly lustrous, reflective at the rims and across the reverse. The light yellow gold surfaces are even and attractive, free of any notable problems. An exceptionally pleasing example of the scarce first Popayán emission of this design type. From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins. From Christie's Geneva sale of the Kurt Homme Collection, November 25-26, 1981, lot 711." This "standard bust" eight escudos, struck 1772-84, superseded the "rat nose" bust used at Bogotá 1762-71. The Popayán mint also adopted the new bust, dropping the old bust of the prior king, Ferdinand VI, used until 1771. The year marked a debasement from .917 fine to .901 fine gold.
