The specimen shown was lot 212 in Aureo y Calico sale 242 (Barcelona, March 2012), where it sold for 22,000 € (about US$34,156 including buyer's fees). The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"''Carlos III (1759-1788). 1769. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino. JV. 8 escudos. Tipo ´cara de rata´. Insignificantes rayitas. Bellísima. Brillo original. Extraordinariamente rara. S/C-.'' (Charles III, 1759-88, eight escudos of 1769, Bogotá mint, "rat nose" type. Tiny scratches, very handsome, full luster, extremely rare, about uncirculated.)

''Habitualmente, el ensayador usaba la inicial de su nombre de pila para marcar las monedas de cuya calidad se responsabilizaba. En ausencia de otra documentación, esta práctica resulta de poca fiabilidad a la hora de identificar a determinados ensayadores, tanto más cuanto ni siquiera era sistemática. Cuando los oficiales eran dos, la letra del ensayador mayor o más antiguo aparece en primer lugar. Las onzas de Santa Fe venían marcadas JV desde 1759, por Juan Chávez y Victoriano Valle. En 1769 se produce un cambio: únicamente en este año los 2 y los 8 escudos van firmados con la V sola, mientras que la media onza aparece ya con las siglas VJ, que se mantendrán en todos los valores durante el siguiente lustro.
