This specimen was lot 976 in Künker sale 263 (Osnabrück, June 2015), where it sold for €550 (about US$711 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''KÖLN, STADT Reichstaler 1568, mit Titel Maximilians II. Attraktives Exemplar mit hübscher Patina, sehr schön-vorzüglich.'' ([[Germany]], city of Cologne, thaler of 1568, in the name of Maximilian II. Toned, attractive, very fine to extremely fine.)"</blockquote> The archbishopric of Cologne, like Mainz and Trier, was an ecclesiastical state along the river Rhine whose ruler was one of the Electors of the Empire. This type of 1568-74 is the only reasonably available thaler from this locale during the sixteenth century.
