This specimen was lot 3358 in Stacks-Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $317.25. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "CHILE. Peso, 1854. NGC EF Details--Polished." This specimen was one of a series struck 1853-62 in Santiago, [[Chile]].
It is the first peso struck in Chile to the metric standard.
The silver minors, such as the [[Chile 1855 decimo|decimo]], featured a different condor with outstretched wings.
This type is much scarcer than the mintage would indicate and usually sells for a premium over the catalog value.
Nice, original specimens are very rare.
In compensation, the succeeding type with the upright condor ([[Chile 1871-So peso|KM 142.1]]), struck 1867-91, is very common.
