This specimen was lot 11580 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice Online Auction (Costa Mesa, CA, February 2025), where it sold for €85 (about US$89). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Germany|GERMANY]]. 4 Schilling (4 Skilling), ND (1619-22). [[German States, Bremen|Bremen]] Mint. Johann Friedrich. NGC VF-20. Nice specimen of this popular horseman type. From the L. E. Bruun Collection." The archbishopric of Bremen was established in the eleventh century. Like most of northern Germany, including the separate free city of Bremen, it went over to Lutheranism in the mid-sixteenth century and all its archbishops were Lutherans after 1568. John Frederick of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp (born 1579, ruled 1596-1634) was the Lutheran Administrator of the Prince-Archbishopric of Bremen, the Prince-Bishopric of Lübeck and the Prince-Bishopric of Verden. He desperately tried to remain neutral during the Thirty Years War but found his domain occupied by the Danes (1617), the count of Tilly (1628) and the Swedes (1631). This type was struck in imitation of Russian wire kopeks. The value is marked "4 S.L." = 4 schilling Lübsk. The nettle leaf above the horse's rear is the Holstein arms.
