This specimen was lot 1102 in Jean Elsen sale 147 (Brussels, June 2021), where it sold for €3,200 (about US$4,677 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''BREDA, belegerd door de Spanjaarden (juli 1624 - 5 juli 1625), AR 40 stuiver, emissie januari 1625. 1e type. Vz/ Klimmende leeuw met zwaard en pijlenbundel. In de hoeken, waardeaanduiding 40, hoorntje, stadswapen en roosje. Zeer zeldzaam. goede Zeer Fraai. Na de inname van Jülich (1621) en het mislukte beleg van Bergen op Zoom werd Breda vanaf juli 1624 belegerd door de markies van Spinola, de generaal van het Spaanse leger. Het plaatselijke garnizoen stond onder het bevel van Justinus van Nassau, een natuurlijke zoon van Maurits van Nassau. Toen er in januari 1625 een nijpend geldgebrek was ontstaan, verplichtte hij zijn kapiteins al hun zilveren vaatwerk in te leveren om er noodmunten uit te laten maken die in inloop werden gebracht aan een geforceerde koers van het dubbele van de intrinsieke waarde. Koper werd alleen gebruikt voor de lagere waarden. De stad capituleerde op 5 juli 1625.'' Very rare, good Very Fine.)"</blockquote> As a key stronghold on the border between [[Netherlands, Spanish|Brabant]] and [[Netherlands, Holland|Holland]], Breda was heavily involved in the Eighty Years War between the Dutch and the Spanish. Held by the Dutch, it was captured by the Spanish in 1581, retaken by the Dutch in 1590, besieged and captured by the Spanish in 1624-25 (resulting in the uniface siege coinage shown here) and retaken by the Dutch in 1637. The Spanish formally ceded it by the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648, and it was part of the United Provinces until the arrival of French Revolutionary armies in 1792.
