This specimen was lot 6501 in Stack's Bowers NYINC sale (New York, January 2022), where it sold for $288. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Brazil|BRAZIL]]. 500 Reis, 1861. Rio de Janeiro Mint. Pedro II. PCGS MS-65. An attractive and well struck example with full cartwheel luster. Presenting with an alluring russet toning that is mostly prominent near the peripheries. It is no surprise that this is the finest certified example at PCGS." This five hundred réis is one of a type struck in Brazil 1853-67. Most of the fourteen dates of the type are reasonably available; this one is common. It is part of the second reform of the coinage under the Empire; the first, in 1835, revalued the Spanish American peso from 960 réis to 1200 réis. The second reform of 1848 raised the peso to 2000 réis, where it remained until 1900.
