This specimen was lot 1210 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $29,900. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"1780 1,600 reis. Bahia mint. Conjoined busts of Maria I and Pedro III to right, legends and date around/crowned arms. Bright and lustrous yellow gold with excellent eye appeal. A bit softly struck at base of crown. A remarkable specimen of this very rare issue, missing from most collections. The Norweb piece was not particularly nice, called 'removed from jewelry, fine, rare,' yet it realized $4,950 against an estimate of $300-500. A 1781 Bahia piece in condition closer to the present piece, called 'choice extremely fine, lustrous' brought a stunning $13,200 against an estimate of $3,000 to $5,000. While the Brazilian market is perhaps not as active today as it was during the Norweb sale, we suspect this important Mint State example will see active bidding. Possibly from the 1935 Newcomer sale, where lot 107 was a specimen of this date and mint described as 'Ex. fine. Rare.' It was not plated and brought $52. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."</blockquote> This type, the last of this denomination, was struck 1781-84; all dates are rare as is this denomination as a class.
