The minting of copper five réis began with a brief issue in 1694-95 but did not begin in earnest until 1749. This specimen was struck at the Lisbon mint for [[Brazil]] in 1768-74. Many were countermarked in 1809 to raise their value to ten réis. The last five réis was issued in 1797. Counterfeits are numerous but are collected alongside the genuine issues.
