This specimen was lot 31032 in Heritage sale 3037 (New York, January 2015), where it sold for $12,925. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "Jose I gold 3200 Reis (Meia Peça) 1768-B AU Details (Polished) NGC, Bahia mint. Rather handsome for the designation with lightly burnished surfaces yet still attractive with a broad flan and quite well detailed. An overall presentable representative of this very rare type, quite desirable as such. Despite being minted in more years (14 different dates are confirmed) than the similar -and also very elusive - issue minted at Rio (7 confirmed dates), the present coin represents a decidedly rarer type. This is confirmed by a review of the public offerings of the past two decades, where only a handful of offerings of the Bahia Jose I Meia Peças are noted. Another significant offering for the Brazilian Colonial series. From The Santa Catarina Collection of Brazilian Gold Coins." This type was struck in Bahia 1752-1777 and in Rio 1755-73 only. Despite the listing of sixteen dates for Bahia and only six for Rio, the SCWC assigns a lower price to the Rio issue. A rare denomination for either mint.
