This specimen was lot 33140 in Heritage sale 3094 (Chicago, August 2021), where it sold for $9,000. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Brazil]]: Pedro II gold 4000 Reis 1704-R MS63+ NGC, Rio de Janeiro mint, Of markedly higher quality than can normally be expected, not just for the date, but also for this five-year type as a whole, this choice example deserves strong acclaim for its appealing surfaces that reveal a profound gold foil luster. Well-struck, with a centrally positioned placement of the dies lending a laudable aesthetic balance, this offering ranks as the finest certified across both PCGS and NGC combined." This type was struck 1703-07 along with a rare 2000 réis ([[Brazil 1703-R 2000 reis|KM 100]]). All the dates are rare. Mintage of this denomination was suspended in 1727; when it resumed in 1749 it was at a lower weight of 8.07 g.
