This silver 250 réis was counterstamped in [[Brazil]] about 1663. The first specimen was lot 20346 in Heritage sale 3009 (Chicago, April 2010), where it sold for $431.25. The catalog description[1] noted, "João IV 2S0 Reis Countermark on Portuguese 200 Reis (Porto), better Fine."

The second specimen was lot 23143 in Heritage sale 3012 (New York, January 2011), where it sold for $747.50. The catalog description[2] noted, <blockquote>"Pedro II Crowned 250 (Reis) Counterstamped on a Portugal 1/2 Cruzado of João IV Porto (Decree of 1688), choice toned VF+ countermark and host coin, a most attractive example of this revalued coinage. On this variety the 250 is expressed as 2S0."</blockquote> This type is rare; it is listed in the SCWC as a "type IV" countermark. In 1695 mints were opened in Brazil, obviating the need for countermarks.
