This specimen was lot 1057 in the Eliasberg sale, where it sold for $8050. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"1834 LM 4 escudos. Potosi mint. AU details (NCS). Types as above. Attractive light yellow gold, but showing some hairlines from a light cleaning. Good lustre, reflective at peripheries, area of toning on sun, arc-shaped planchet flaw at top of reverse. A significant rarity, the only year of this type. The lovely Mint State Norweb coin brought more than $8,000 in 1997. Harry F. Williams, an advanced collector of Latin American coins whose biography appears at the front of the catalogue, did not list this type at all in his unpublished monograph on the gold coins of Latin America (''ca.'' 1918). Despite owning a substantial library and building a great collection that formed the basis of the Newcomer collection, he never encountered a single specimen of this issue in 20 years of looking, including extensive travels among the coin dealers and cambistas of South America. While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. The four scudos denomination is rare, being struck 1834 and 1841 only.
