The first specimen was lot 1046 in the [[The Eliasberg Collection|Eliasberg sale]], where it sold for $2760. The catalog description[1] noted, <blockquote>"1822 PJ 8 escudos. Potosi mint. AU-58 (NGC). Laureate head of Fernando VII to right, legends around, date below/crowned arms at center, garter around, denomination within garter, legends around garter, assayer's mark and mintmark below shield. Rich medium gold with exceptional satiny lustre and excellent visual appeal. Choice for the grade, reverse appears Uncirculated and obverse shows only light friction. Potosi 8 escudos of this type in this kind of condition are quite scarce. This date called 'rara' (rare) in Calico. From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942."</blockquote> The second specimen was lot 3431 in Goldberg sale 67 (Los Angeles, January 2012), where it sold for $2,012.50. The catalog description[2] noted, "[[Bolivia]]. 8 Escudos, 1822-PJ (Potosi). Ferdinand VII, 1808-1824. Laureate head right. Reverse: Crowned arms. Faint hairline scratch on obverse. Lustrous. NGC graded AU-55."

While silver coins from [[Bolivia]] exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, [[Colombia]] may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, [[Chile]] and [[Guatemala]] are minor sources. This type was minted 1822-24 only and is quite a bit scarcer than the previous type with Charles IV (KM 81, struck 1791-1808).
