This specimen was lot 782 in Sedwick Auction 36 (Winter Park, FL, November 2024), where it sold for $. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Bolivia|BOLIVIA]], Potosí, gold bust 1 escudo, Charles IV, 1792 PR, very rare, NGC MS 63, finest and only example in NGC census. Highly lustrous and choice despite minor flaws (laminations, flan-crack, and strike-throughs), the crude bust (from a rusty punch) a local substitute in 1792 for the correct bust after 1791's temporary laureate bust, first example we have seen, a stunning and important coin for the colonial Potosí specialist." While silver coins from Bolivia exist in vast quantities, gold from Bolivia is scarce. For the colonial period, Colombia may be regarded as the most prolific issuer, followed by Mexico, followed by Peru. Bolivia, Chile and Guatemala are minor sources. This type was minted 1791-1808 and is rare.
