The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''1671. Carlos II. Potosí. E. 8 reales. Redonda. Tipo "Real". Perforación. Rara. MBC.'' (kingdom of [[Spain]], Charles II, eight reales of 1671, Potosi mint, round "royal" tyoe. Holed, rare, very fine.)"</blockquote> This type was struck 1667-1700 for Charles II. It superseded the shield/cross type which was involved in the debasement scandal of the 1630's and 1640's. Royals, struck for presentation, are all rare and nearly always come holed. Assayer E operated 1651-78. We don't know why this presentation piece is 3 g underweight. The hole is not large enough to remove 10% of the coin's weight.
