This specimen was lot 71120 in Stack's Bowers Collectors Choice sale (Costa Mesa, CA, November 2022), where it sold for $780. The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, "[[Bolivia|BOLIVIA]]. Cob 4 Reales, 1658-P. Potosi Mint, Assayer Antonia de Ergueta (E). Philip IV. PCGS EF-45. A wonderfully well-preserved specimen with wholesome surfaces and lightly-handled detail. The obverse exhibits a notable partial die rotation, somewhat mangling the central pillars but revealing the name of the Viceroyalty, "PERV", from the otherwise absent outer legend. Besides that, sharply struck assayer's initials, mintmarks, and date are all presented satisfyingly. The reverse is the highlight of the coin in this cataloger's opinion: the mintmark, denomination, assayer's initial, and three-digit date all appear with full legibility. More impressive are the castles and lions, struck in unusually high relief with bold detail and unmarred by the flatness or doubling that typically plague this detail. A mesmerizing piece; it is unsurprisingly the finest certified by PCGS. From the Pat Johnson Collection. Ex Kagin's 1983 ANA sale, August 1983, lot 1191." Assayer Rodas was brought in from Spain to restore the purity of the cobs struck at Potosi which had been debased as low as 0.700 fine. He did improve the quality but his product still did not meet the legal standard. He was sacked and replaced by Ergueta, who introduced the new "pillars and waves" design which would show the date and assayer's initials on even the worst strike.
