Bold full date outside good full cross, bold P-dot-Z/T (doubled) to left of good full shield, AVF with flat spots and uneven thickness, also hairline edge-split, nevertheless arguably the finest known of this extremely rare over-assayer (missing in KM, Calico, Sellschopp, and Paoletti) that is sometimes mis-attributed to Z/TR due to the fancy shape of the Z." This type was struck 1625-48 for Philip IV. It was discredited in the debasement scandal of 1650-52 when authorities in Spain finally acknowledged that the Potosi mint had been debasing cobs to as low as 0.700 fine silver. Assayer "Z" served 1648-49 only. Another assayer, Felipe Ramirez de Arellano, was executed for his role. The other mints were instructed to melt down the nonconforming cobs but coin shortages were such that they were counterstamped instead. Even so, these late dates (after 1645) are rare today.
