This specimen was lot 3458 in Künker sale 335 (Osnabruck, Germany, March 2020), where it sold for €650 (about US$851 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"''BAYERN, HERZOGTUM, SEIT 1623 KURFÜRSTENTUM, SEIT 1806 KÖNIGREICH: Ferdinand Maria, 1651-1679. 1/9 Taler 1657, München, auf das Vikariat. RR Sehr schön.'' ([[Germany]], electorate of [[German States, Bavaria|Bavaria]], Ferdinand Maria, 1651-79, one-ninth thaler of 1657, Munich mint, for the Vicariat. Rare, very fine.)"</blockquote> On the death of Ferdinand III, the elector became vicar of the empire until his successor (Leopold I) could be elected. We presume that the Hapsburgs saw to it that Ferdinand Maria's powers were purely ceremonial. This odd coin commemorates the occasion. It is the last of the denomination.
