This specimen was lot 2069 in Sincona sale 25 (Zurich, October 2015), where it sold for 725,000 CHF (about US$895,538 including buyer's fees). The catalog description<sup>[1]</sup> noted, <blockquote>"30 Ducats o. J. (about 1700). Dies by Justin de Beyer (1668-1738). Rosette DOMINE CONSERVA NOS IN PACE. City view seen from the Northeast, BASILEA above. In the middle the Rhine bridge and seven ships. Surrounded by a pearl- and linear circle. Rev. A Basilisk turned to r. holding the oval city arms. Underneath, the initials I D B of the die cutter. Eight richly decorated shields of arms in a circle. In the middle above beginning: Farnsburg, Homberg, Münchenstein, Pratteln, Riehen, Ramstein, Liestal and Waldenburg. Between each of the arms a lily decoration. On the edge traces of a minting ring. Of the highest rarity. Unique. Brilliant uncirculated. Cabinet piece in magnificent conservation. This is the largest Swiss gold coin. It stems from the collection of the Mayor Andreas Merian-Iselin (19.9.1742 until 25.2.1811). With the end of the Helvetian Republic Merian returned to Basel where he was elected Mayor in 1803 and 1806 by the Great Council. Ex UBS Auction 52, Lot 585."</blockquote> This type rides the border between coin and medal; struck for presentation but doubtless spent when need pressed. Friedberg also mentions a fifteen, twenty and twenty-five ducats, all rare.
