This specimen was struck for Pedro III, count of Barcelona, who was also king Pedro IV of Aragon, Sardinia, Corsica, Valencia and later king of Mallorca and duke of Athens. He was born in 1319, crowned in 1337 and died in 1387. He was succeeded by Juan I (r. 1387-96), his son by his third wife. [[Spain]] would not be united for another century. An almost identical croat (Cay-1835) was issued by his predecessor Pedro II (r. 1276-85).
